Types of Cosmetic Manufacturing Vessels

Vacuum Homogenising Emulsifiers

The vacuum homogenising emulsifier is the most important vessel in cream and lotion manufacturing. It combines a high-speed rotor-stator homogeniser (droplet size reduction, emulsification), a slow-speed anchor agitator (heat transfer, bulk mixing), a vacuum system (de-aeration) and a jacketed vessel (heating and cooling). Available 50L (R&D) to 5,000L (production). All product-contact parts SS 316L with Ra ≤ 0.8 µm mirror-polished interiors. VFD-controlled homogeniser (1,500–3,600 rpm) and anchor agitator (5–60 rpm) for full process flexibility.

Planetary Mixers

Planetary mixers are preferred for high-viscosity cosmetic products — thick creams, wax-based balms, lip products, toothpaste. The planetary motion ensures thorough mixing with no dead spots. Interchangeable agitators (flat beater for creams, wire whisk for aerated products, dough hook for high-viscosity, anchor for heat transfer) handle a wide viscosity range in the same machine. Jacketed Storage and Transfer Vessels

Finished cosmetic bulk (cream, lotion, shampoo base, conditioner) is stored in jacketed SS 316L vessels before filling. The jacket maintains product temperature to prevent phase separation and keep viscosity within the pumpable range for the filling line. Bottom-entry slow agitator (intermittent) maintains homogeneity during extended storage. All connections use sanitary tri-clamp fittings compatible with cosmetic filling equipment.

Phase Preparation Tanks

Cream and lotion manufacturing requires separate water phase preparation (heating water-soluble ingredients to 70–80°C) and oil phase preparation (melting waxes and emulsifiers at 70–80°C) before combining them in the main emulsifier. Dedicated phase preparation tanks with independent heating, agitation and temperature control improve batch cycle time and processing consistency versus preparing both phases in the main vessel.

GMP and ISO 22716 Requirements for Cosmetic Vessels

Indian cosmetics are governed by Schedule M-II of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, which mandates GMP for cosmetic manufacturing facilities. Equipment must be of non-reactive material, easily cleanable, regularly maintained and not introduce contamination. The international benchmark is ISO 22716:2007 (Good Manufacturing Practices for Cosmetics) — required by retailers, e-commerce platforms and export markets globally. Critical Process Parameters in Cosmetic Emulsion Manufacturing

Temperature control: Water and oil phases are heated separately to 70–80°C, combined and homogenised, then cooled to 35–40°C for addition of heat-sensitive actives (fragrances, vitamins, botanical extracts, preservatives) before cooling to packaging temperature (25–30°C). Deviations from the validated temperature profile cause phase separation, viscosity changes and stability failures.

Vacuum level: Vacuum (–0.6 to –0.9 bar gauge) during mixing removes dissolved and entrained air. Air in finished cream causes oxidation of active ingredients, unsightly air pockets, reduced density and shorter shelf life. Vacuum de-aeration during the cooling phase prevents air entrainment from product shrinkage.

Homogeniser parameters: Rotor-stator speed (rpm) and total homogenisation time determine the droplet size distribution (D50) of the emulsion and hence texture, stability and appearance. Validated parameters are established during formulation development and confirmed at each production scale-up.

What equipment is needed to manufacture face cream commercially?

Minimum commercial setup: (1) Water phase tank with heating and agitation. (2) Oil phase tank with heating. What is the difference between a vacuum emulsifier and a planetary mixer?

A vacuum emulsifier uses a high-speed rotor-stator homogeniser combined with anchor agitation under vacuum — suitable for low to medium viscosity O/W and W/O emulsions, achieves fine droplet sizes (1-10 microns), performs de-aeration simultaneously. A planetary mixer uses interchangeable beaters with planetary orbital motion — better for high-viscosity products (thick creams, wax bases, lip balms, toothpaste) where homogeniser impellers would cavitate or overload at the required viscosity. For most cream and lotion manufacturing above 50L, the vacuum emulsifier is preferred.

Most commercial cosmetic plants operate with 500L-2,000L emulsifiers for daily production of 200-1,000 kg of finished cream or lotion per batch.
