Liquid Fertilizer Storage and Blending Tanks
Liquid NPK storage tank material depends on the product: HDPE for small volumes (500L–20,000L), FRP with vinyl ester resin for medium tanks (20,000L–1,00,000L), SS 316L for premium applications, and MS with epoxy lining for large bulk storage. UAN (Urea Ammonium Nitrate) solution tanks require special attention to material compatibility — carbon steel is acceptable for UAN at ambient temperature; SS 316L for elevated temperature service. Heating coils or tracing are needed for high-concentration liquid fertilizers that crystallise at low temperatures.
NPK Liquid Fertilizer Neutraliser Reactors
Liquid NPK fertilizer production neutralises phosphoric acid with ammonia in a continuous or batch reactor. The highly exothermic neutralisation reaction requires a jacketed reactor with adequate cooling capacity. FRP-lined or SS 316L reactor for phosphoric acid service; Hastelloy for high-purity NPK. Agitator must ensure thorough mixing of viscous phosphoric acid with ammonia at all load conditions without dead zones where local concentration spikes could cause scaling.
Ammonia Storage — Pressurised and Refrigerated
Urea and AN manufacturing requires large-volume ammonia storage. Pressurised storage uses horizontal cylindrical steel bullets at 8–16 kg/cm² working pressure in ambient temperature service. Refrigerated storage uses flat-bottom tanks at –33°C with atmospheric pressure using cryogenic-grade carbon steel (SA 516-70N, A333 Gr 6) inner vessel, perlite powder vacuum insulation, outer steel jacket and extensive safety systems. Both types require ASME/IBR certification and PESO/CCOE approval before operation in India.
Phosphoric Acid Storage
Phosphoric acid (28% or 54% P2O5) storage tanks require corrosion-resistant construction: rubber-lined MS for wet process acid (28% P2O5), Saramet or Hastelloy G-30 for concentrated thermal acid (54% P2O5), or SS 316L for dilute acid below 10% concentration. High-density phosphoric acid (SG 1.68 for 54% P2O5) requires structural design check for liquid head loads. Heating coils (hot water at 60–70°C) prevent crystallisation in concentrated acid storage during cold weather.
Rotary Drum Dryers for Fertilizer Granules
NPK, DAP and urea granulation plants use large rotary drum dryers (diameter 1.5m–4m, length 10m–30m) to remove moisture from wet fertilizer granules at 100–250 kg/hr to 10,000 kg/hr throughput. The drum shell is heavy-duty MS with internal flights (lifters). Exhaust air carries fertilizer dust requiring pulse jet bag filters or wet scrubbers to meet CPCB emission limits below 100 mg/Nm3 dust concentration.
Safety in Fertilizer Process Vessels
Ammonium nitrate safety: AN is an oxidising agent that can deflagrate and detonate under confinement, contamination with chlorides or organic materials, or strong shock initiation. AN vessels and storage must comply with PESO AN storage regulations — non-reactive materials, prevention of contamination, adequate ventilation, fire suppression and emergency response planning are all mandatory.
Ammonia safety: Liquid ammonia is toxic (IDLH: 300 ppm) and flammable (LEL: 15% in air). Ammonia facilities require continuous fixed gas detection with automatic shutdown, emergency refrigeration for refrigerated storage, ammonia vapour scrubbers on relief vents, designated exclusion zones and SCBA-equipped emergency response teams. What material is best for liquid NPK fertilizer storage tanks?
HDPE for small volumes up to 20,000L (economical, good chemical resistance). FRP with vinyl ester resin for 20,000L to 1,00,000L (corrosion resistant at medium scale). SS 316L for premium product applications where zero metal contamination is critical. MS with epoxy lining for large bulk storage above 1,00,000L where carbon steel economics are favourable. What capacity rotary dryers do you supply for fertilizer plants?
We supply rotary drum dryers for fertilizer granule drying from 500 kg/hr to 15,000 kg/hr product capacity. Drum diameters 0.8m to 4m, lengths 5m to 30m. Direct-fired with LDO, natural gas or coal burners, or indirect-fired with steam or hot oil heating. Complete system includes feed screw conveyor, inlet chute, drive arrangement (motor, gearbox, pinion gear, riding rings and trunnion rollers), trommel screen and exhaust system with cyclone separator and pulse jet bag filter.
What are the regulations for fertilizer storage tanks in India?
Fertilizer storage regulations depend on the product: PESO (Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation) governs ammonia, ammonium nitrate and other hazardous substances. CPCB and State PCB regulate air, water and solid waste emissions from fertilizer plants. The Fertilizer Control Order regulates product quality standards. Factory inspectorates under the Factories Act regulate workplace safety including pressure vessels and bulk chemical storage.
